The Opportunity
Knowledge Network, BC's public educational broadcaster and streamer, is looking for a dedicated Front End (REACT) Developer to grow and enhance our streaming services on web, mobile and internet TV platforms. This is an exciting opportunity to join a small, talented in-house team of developers and designers at an exciting time in our growth as an organization. Over the next year we will be undertaking an extensive redesign of Knowledge.ca (our service for adults 40+ with curious minds) with KnowledgeKids.ca (our service for preschoolers) to follow. We are seeking a talented individual who is committed to ensuring the audiences for our popular services have the best viewing experience possible across all platforms.
As an integral member of Knowledge's Streaming Platforms team, you will be responsible for the development and maintenance of front-end components for both Knowledge.ca and KnowledgeKids.ca - platforms that are accessed daily by thousands of British Columbians and Canadians. You will play a crucial role in advancing and refining the user experience on both streaming services, with a primary focus on enhancing their front-end functionalities.

British Columbia's Knowledge Network is an independent provincial public broadcaster, operating a free and commercial-free linear television channel in B.C. and streaming services across Canada.
Our office is located in Burnaby on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples who continue to steward these lands and waters as they have since time immemorial. We recognize these Indigenous Peoples who actively create, shape and contribute to our thriving communities.
Funded by an annual operating grant from the provincial government and donations from loyal viewers, Knowledge Network offers a diverse range of premium content including world-class documentaries, arts and culture, nature, science, drama and children's programs. Our programming informs, enlightens and connects British Columbians to each other and the world.
What You will be Doing:
- Developing new user-facing features using React.js, focusing on simplicity and usability.
- Building reusable components and front-end libraries to streamline development efforts and ensure consistency across the platform.
- Translating designs and wireframes into clean, maintainable code, ensuring a seamless transition from concept to implementation.
- Optimizing components for performance across various devices and browsers, prioritizing a smooth user experience.
- Collaborating closely with designers to ensure technical feasibility while aligning with UI/UX goals.
- Coordinating with backend developers to integrate front-end components smoothly with server-side logic.
- Planning, documenting, and developing API Schemas.
- Utilizing and interacting with APIs for data retrieval and integration, ensuring seamless functionality within the application.
- Participating in code reviews to maintain code quality and providing constructive feedback to colleagues.
What You Bring to the Team:
Experience & Knowledge:
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Computer Science/related field, or equivalent working experience.
- 5+ years Front End (REACT) Development experience.
- Excellent proficiency in React.js, including a strong understanding of component lifecycle, hooks, and context API.
- Fluency in JavaScript and ES6+ features, with the ability to write clean, maintainable code.
- Experience with state management libraries such as Redux or Context API.
- Proficiency in integrating RESTful APIs or GraphQL APIs into React applications.
- Knowledge of testing React components using Jest, React Testing Library, or similar testing libraries.
- Experience with CSS/SCSS and HTML for mobile and desktop design.
- Ability to optimize React applications for better performance and scalability.
- Experience with Drupal is an asset.
