Ballard's Transformational Projects team is globally expanding its MEA, stack, and module production facilities. We are seeking a talented Intermediate Manufacturing Engineer to join our Burnaby facility and drive globalization and advanced manufacturing methods.
As Ballard adds to its global production footprint, we require people with strong technical and communication skillsets who can accurately transfer product and equipment requirements from our internal technical team to our selected equipment suppliers. Each production cell must deliver against stringent product requirements and project timeline deliverables.
The successful candidate will have a track record of working with suppliers to procure new equipment or products, optimizing production processes, and applying knowledge from lean six sigma methodology to find innovative equipment solutions. They will require a keen eye for spotting waste early in equipment design phases and the ability to rapidly complete risk assessments cascading across several equipment cells. The candidate should also have excellent communication skills and experience dealing with Operation departments and Design department stakeholders to ensure the equipment will achieve the product and production requirements.
Responsibilities: - Procurement of new bespoke capital equipment
- Project tracking equipment milestones
- Lead risk analysis studies on new production line equipment
- Demonstrate the ability to translate product requirements into equipment requirements/specifications
- Write detailed technical reports and equipment specifications for equipment trials and procurement
- Interface with product development and tooling designers to improve
- process capability and support the standardization of equipment and tooling measurement
- Review product and equipment assembly drawings, test specifications, and provide feedback to design teams and equipment suppliers
- Identify design improvements for DFMA and communicate effectively back to design teams
- Analyze and communicate technical information, including process capability, yield, and cycle time analysis, to the cross-functional management team regularly
- Execute on parallel equipment projects and manage project priorities
- Take complex technical details, distill them to understandable content, and present to project stakeholders
- Ensure cost efficiency and conformance with regulatory standards
- Use lean six sigma tools, such as process flow maps, 5 Why analysis, Design of Experiment, measurement system analysis, capability studies, and statistical process control charts to ensure processes are optimized
Requirements: - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing, Chemical, or Process Engineering, or an equivalent qualification
- Professional Engineering designation (or eligibility) is an asset
- Demonstrated capability in project or program management
- Experience in assessing product requirements and how they translate to manufacturing equipment costs and capability is an asset
- Minimum 3+ years of manufacturing or process/product development experience
- Hands-on approach with machinery commissioning is essential
- Strong observation and analytical skills to troubleshoot process and quality-related issues
- Experience with engineering practices such as Lean Six Sigma, MSA, GR&R, Value Stream Mapping, FMEA, Design of Experiments, SPC, Kaizen, 5S, and others are an asset.
- Knowledge of technical documentation related to manufacturing, including the use of control plan, FMEA, process flow diagram, SOP, setup checklists, and equipment requirements.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, supported by strong data analysis skill (using Excel or other statistical software, such as Minitab)
- Experience working in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment
- Lead the purchase and procurement of new capital equipment
