Want to use your expertise in scientific and business research to connect to a career that makes a difference? As the manager, research and business initiatives in the Office of Learning, Leading, Sharing, you'll do just that. Working closely with the Senior Manager and Chief Planning Officer, you will lead the development and implementation of a new vision for WorkSafeBC research grants program, environmental scanning, partnerships with research and other agencies, and other departmental initiatives.
You will also be responsible for communications with different WorkSafeBC department leaders, the Enterprise Leadership Team (ELT), Board of Directors (BOD), as well as with key external worker and employer stakeholders, research community, and other organizations.
This is currently a hybrid position where you will work primarily at home and be on-site at our Richmond office occasionally.
What you'll do
As a manager, research & business initiatives you will:
- Develop and implement the strategic vision for areas of responsibility including, optimizing, growing and managing the research grants program, overseeing the corporate grants program and developing and implementing an ongoing process to scan the external environment to gather insights to support development of WorkSafeBC strategies and programs
- Collaborate with researchers, national and international networks of regulators and compensation agencies, national and international associations, stakeholders, internal departments and divisions to ensure WorkSafeBC has the best evidence to inform corporate strategies and initiatives
- Work collaboratively to develop and maintain a departmental team site, and research services website to share research reports and departmental activities with internal and external stakeholders
- Participate in strategic and business planning and decision making activities
- Work with technology and analytical tools to develop, collect and track metrics and impact measurements and analyze data to assess ongoing impact of the research grants program and other portfolio initiatives
- Work with the senior divisional leaders to operationalize research and provide assurance to the ELT on outcomes of funded projects
- Present to the BOD & ELT on research matters related to funded projects, corporate grants and environmental scanning process
- Provide leadership, mentorship, coaching, direction and management to departmental staff to provide client-focused services while ensuring necessary administrative and technical resources and services are available to support staff in performing their duties

We're looking for someone who can:
- Keep up to date on knowledge in the field of occupational health and safety, epidemiology, statistics, and other areas relevant to WorkSafeBC's mandate
- Maintain professional networks of contacts related to areas of portfolio
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to various stakeholders
- Research, analyze, and prepare written reports, discussion papers, briefing notes, presentations and other documentation on research or other initiatives
- Excel in a fast paced, dynamically changing work environment
- Gather and analyze information, anticipate and recognize risks and opportunities, develop options and solutions, and make appropriate decisions and recommendations
- Foster an innovation mindset, encourage new ideas, and creates a supportive and healthy working environment
- Create a supportive working environment by ensuring effective communication, promoting teamwork, providing opportunities for staff involvement into planning and recognizing employees' contributions and achievements. Provide support to staff as changes and new initiatives are implemented in the workplace.
Your experience and educational background:
- Master's degree in epidemiology, occupational hygiene, or a related field; training or experience with research methods and knowledge of statistical and epidemiological analysis would be an asset
- A minimum of five years of people management experience, preferably in a unionized environment
- Project management training and/or experience, and stakeholder engagement strongly preferred
- Experience with knowledge translation and dissemination, environmental scanning and strategic foresights would be an asset
