Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.
Position Overview:
As a member of the Diagnostics team, the Mechanical Engineer will work to support the mechanical development, maintenance, and repair of plasma diagnostics in the lab at General Fusion's headquarters in Metro Vancouver. The data collected from these diagnostics will help inform the design and operation of the Fusion Demonstration Plant.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mechanical design and construction of diagnostic supports, optics mounts, electronics enclosures, high vacuum assemblies, and other diagnostic structural components
- Designing vibration mitigation solutions for sensitive optical components
- Assembling, installing, and troubleshooting diagnostic test equipment
- Repairing and maintaining diagnostic equipment
- Driving continuous improvement in General Fusion's plasma diagnostics including the diagnostic hardware, calibration procedures, and recordkeeping
- Designing test jigs for prototype validation
Relevant Education, Skills and Experience:
- Experience with 3D CAD/CAM design
- Basic machine shop skills
- Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to work hands-on with the components of the design
- Knowledge of vibration mitigation techniques
- Good organization skills and attention to detail
- Flexibility to adapt to a rapidly changing work environment
Preferred
- Good knowledge of SolidWorks CAD
- Proficient with lathe and milling machines
- Experience designing components for use in high vacuum, high voltage environments
- Experience designing small, precision parts
- Experience in designing & validating prototypes in a research and development setting
