Vancouver, BC, October 16, 2017--(T-Net)--Students looking for careers that offer challenging, rewarding and creative work in the booming tech sector will be rewarded with good starting wages, according to results from HR Tech Group's annual BC Tech Salary Survey, just released.
Overall, salaries for new grads increased almost 10%, so a new grad starting as an entry level software developer earns a median of $65,000/year.
Likewise, intermediate software development roles with up to 2 years' experience increased 7.7% to $77,000/year. The increases demonstrate that as companies grow, they need to entice new talent into their organizations.
The 2017 BC Tech Salary Survey, conducted for HR Tech Group in partnership with Mercer, includes data for 15,000 individual salaries from 116 companies. Each year the survey is expanded to include new roles in the sector, and this year in-demand positions included: cloud/development ops, big data developers, and data scientists.
“Tech salaries in BC continue to rise with the competitiveness for talent,” says Allison Rutherford, Executive Director of HR Tech Group. “While many of the newer in-demand roles pay approximately $100k/year, Vancouver still lags behind salaries in other international tech sectors, and so I expect salaries here will continue to climb.”
Visual effects and animation jobs remain among the top paying jobs in the BC tech sector. This year's survey was expanded to include many of the increased supervisory roles now found in these companies, as film companies continue to grow and expand in Vancouver.
“The digital entertainment sector continues to thrive and be competitive internationally here when it comes to salaries - supervisors in animation, visual effects and technical art direction have median salaries around $150,000/year” says Rutherford.
“Vancouver is an exciting place for global tech companies to set up shop - the wealth of talent, the business climate, our immigration policies, and the collaborative tech eco-system make Vancouver desirable. Although cost of housing remains high, when compared with housing costs in Silicon Valley, it's lower” explained Rutherford. “HR Tech Group is pleased to be able to showcase, in detail, how much this industry is thriving and providing high-paying jobs in our province. If you've got kids considering a career, it's never been a better time than now to pursue one in the tech sector.”
In addition to salaries, this year's report looked at other employment practices in the tech sector. The sector offers more than high paying jobs - over 90% of tech companies provide flex hours, the ability to work from home, subsidized food and alcoholic drinks after work, and 82% are pet friendly. More than half of the tech companies surveyed offer nap rooms.
