Seniors Home Care App wins the X-Factor Prize at the First Health Authority Hackathon
Vancouver, BC, January 30, 2017--(T-Net)--UBC announced this week that CareCrew won the Fraser Health Hackathon sponsored by Simon Fraser University, the City of Surrey, and Innovation Boulevard.
On January 22, CareCrew was presented the X-Factor award by Dr. Victoria Lee, Fraser Health Chief Medical Officer, and Philip Barker, Fraser Health VP, Planning, Informatics and Analytics.
The Fraser Health Hackathon tackled challenges that are affecting the province today. The variety of ideas ranged from applications to address overdose preventions, to connecting people to mental health and addictions support.
CareCrew entered as a wildcard contestant and the sole seniors care app in the competition, tackling the challenge of improving the quality of seniors care.
“The Fraser Health Authority has the highest and fastest growing number of seniors compared to other regions of BC. We want to allow families to be 100% part of the senior's care, whether it is an elderly parent, grandparent, or friend. It's difficult for families to care for elders when they have a full-time job or other commitments. That's where CareCrew comes in. It enables families to better coordinate care for their loved one,” says Christina Chiu, founder and CEO of CareCrew.
Christina is currently in her final year of UBC's Master of Health Administration Program in the Faculty of Medicine and Sauder School of Business.
The team has been developing the concept since entering the Hacking Health Design Challenge at the national e-Health Conference in June 2016. The team completed the entrepreneurship@UBC (e@UBC) Lean Launch Pad accelerator program in December and is currently part of the e@UBC Venture Builder Bootcamp program.

“CareCrew has the team and leadership to attract great mentors and execute, we are very impressed with their progress and we are excited to see what's next,” says Sean Lumb, Director of e@UBC's Life Science venture portfolio.
Building off of their success, CareCrew hopes to co-develop their app with Fraser Health this year to address the growing needs around seniors care in British Columbia.
